What Should I Do???
Everyone asks this question at some point! Do not be discouraged. Fortunately there is a relatively simple answer. If you are looking to get into the IT security field, one of the first certification that you could consider is the CompTIA Security+ certification. This certification is an entry-level certification that covers basic security concepts and skills, such as risk management, network security, and cryptography.
Which IT Security Certification Should I choose?
The CompTIA Security+ certification is vendor-neutral, meaning that it is not specific to any particular vendor or technology. This makes it a good starting point for those who are new to the field and want to gain a broad understanding of network security concepts and best practices.
Additionally, the CompTIA Security+ certification is widely recognized in the industry and is often a requirement for many entry-level IT network security positions. It will also serve as a great stepping stone to more advanced certifications, such as the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) or the Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) certifications.
My Personal Experience
I personally got started in the Information Technology field in 1994 in Columbia, MD where I had started to build custom pc's and connect them to basic networks. In 1996, I joined a large company and started working in NYC rebuilding old hospital data centers. Security honestly was not a huge thing on CIO's minds at that time, but it was becoming so.
I first started learning about access control lists (ACL's) on Cisco 2500 routers. These were the foundation of all firewall rules in Cisco's PIX firewall systems. I became fascinated by acute detail you permit or deny access to resources. My focus was on what was needed most by companies, and since firewalls and VPN were becoming the hot ticket, that is what I focused on.
By 2001, I had earned several IT Networking certifications, including firewall certifications and had begun to design global secure Networks using complex VPN technologies. My salary soared!
I had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and read every book I could get my hands on. Unfortunately 25 years ago, on line trainings were not easily available and the content sparse and learning platforms very Frankensteinish. I wish I had available then what is available now!
Since then, I became an expert in IT Security, learning how attackers think, and learning how to protect valuable assets online and designed and built several SOC's (Security Operation Centers) . I just loved all things security, so that is where I put my energy.
